Tyler is a rock star. For real.
He had doubters and nay-sayers. But I knew he would rock the first day. John made the boys chocolate chip pancakes to kick off the school week. We got Tyler dressed for his big day and took first start of school pics.
Ethan meanwhile doesn’t start until tomorrow but was feeling eager to be in EVERY one of Tyler’s photos. We finally convinced him to give Tyler his moment.
We all walked him into school and got him settled into the classroom. After a quick photo with his teacher, she ushered him to a painting table with the teacher’s aid and we hurriedly scooted out. I felt badly ditching him but we thought it was best. Sure enough, when we peeked through the door, he was busy making a craft. Our Ty-Ty!!! When we were peering into the room, Ethan kept asking “Is he crying? Is he crying”. NOPE. Er, at least not yet.
At pick-up time, Tyler was the line leader and was holding the teacher’s hand. My heart burst for him. I was beaming with pride! He was smiling big and wearing the paper plate around his neck with his handprint that he made when we left him to paint. So sweet. I asked about the day. He said that he did cry when he was outside at recess. The teacher later confirmed that yes, he was a bit weepy mid-morning and said he missed his mommy but that he became her buddy. She said he talked the whole next hour about how “my daddy is as strong as a robot…daddy says not to pull the grass…you can come to the pool with us after school…” It sounds like they bonded!
He talked about school throughout the afternoon. He said he’s going to cry again and we keep telling him that it’s OK if he does and that his teacher is there to help him. Fingers crossed that day 2 goes as smoothly…??
